The evening safari works the opposite shift to sunrise. We head out while the heat is still coming off the rock and settle near the outcrops as the light drops, waiting for leopards to stir from the caves they have spent the day in. It is the hour they begin to hunt, and the hour their movement is most deliberate.
Photographically it is the most rewarding drive we run. The granite holds the last of the sun long after the valley floor has gone into shadow, so a leopard on a high boulder is lit while everything behind it is silhouette. Skies over Jawai in the dry season go from amber to crimson to deep rose within about twenty minutes.
Sunset drives also tend to be the more social ones. Guests who did a sunrise safari earlier in their stay often come back out in the evening for the different light and the different behaviour — the same hills, read at the other end of the day.
We stop for evening snacks while the light goes, usually somewhere with a view down towards the water. Bring a light layer: the temperature drops quickly once the sun is behind the hills.
Leopards leave their day shelters at dusk, which is when movement is most purposeful.
Backlit granite and a crimson sky — the most cinematic conditions in Jawai.
Many guests do both drives to see the same hills behave in two different ways.
Best for: Photographers, couples, and second safaris.
